Problematic issues in Bosnia and Herzegovina:
Usually, the problems of people with special needs in Bosnia and Herzegovina
(BiH) are known only to their families. The BiH society is in a need of a
reform of health, social and educational systems with regard to people with
special needs. The quality of life and work of people with special needs should
not only be addressed through health institutions but through continuous activities
of various projects in many different levels, involving educational, training,
and prequalification programs which are currently not developed in this country.
The first problem that young people with disabilities face is the structure
of education for this population which influences their whole future. The
most common problems affecting people with special needs in Bosnia and Herzegovina
are:
-Architectural barriers, stairs, lack of elevators and ramps.
-Lack of educational materials for hearing-impaired and visually impaired
people.
-No public transportation for people with special needs.
-No personal assistant / nurse program.
-Not enough sign language translators.
-Non supportive media coverage.
-Insufficient number of adequate prosthetics.
-Meagre social and health assistance.
One of the main goals of the Center is to influence active participation of
people with special needs in today’s society, to improve their integration
and form productive connection and understanding between this population and
the rest of the society.
